Science

We study science to explore the world through a scientific lens and to apply our skills to show that we are organised and adventurous learners. We have an aspirational mindset through experiencing scientists past and present.

Subject priorities:
  • To give pupils appropriate experiences to develop as confident, knowledgeable, and responsible scientists
  • To provide a ‘rich capital’ that gives children knowledge and skills for employment and life experiences.
  • To provide a coherent, structured academic curriculum that leads to enjoyable and sustained mastery for all and a greater depth of understanding for those who are capable.

The Developing Experts approach is used at The Richmond School to plan lessons and make sure that every student learns and retains information throughout the programme of study. In each lesson, children are given key facts and knowledge through a storytelling approach to learning. Each lesson offers 5 key words (Rocket Words), these are key words and meanings that the children must learn; this vocabulary is then repeated throughout the lesson, quizzed on at the end and repeated at the beginning of the following lesson.

All our lessons contain a balance of the different ‘Working Scientifically Skills’ and ‘Scientific Enquiry types’ to ensure the skills are learnt and developed in context by linking science concepts to everyday life. We promote the importance of an investigative approach through regular ‘hands on’ experiences and encourage children to ask their own questions and be given time to use their scientific skills and research to discover the answers.

We have developed scientific assessments, which are completed at the beginning (pre-assessment) and end (post-assessment) of a topic to show progression and children’s newfound knowledge and understanding. At The Richmond School, we ensure that at the beginning of each programme of study, the children will be given a knowledge organiser and we have high expectations that the children learn the key vocabulary and key facts for that programme of study. Furthermore, using the Developing Experts platform allows teachers to instantly see the progress children are making and how well the children have mastered the rocket words in context and their scientific enquiry through well-developed interactive multiple-choice questions. Furthermore, each child will complete a pre-test and post-test for each unit of work.
