Music at The Richmond School
Intent
At The Richmond School, children gain an understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of topics and genres. We are committed to developing a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the importance of all types of music, and a respect for the role that music may wish to be expressed in a person’s life. We aim to provide all children with the opportunity to progress to the next level of their own creative excellence and ability.

Implementation
The music curriculum at The Richmond School ensures children sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. This is rooted in the classroom activities as well as our weekly singing service. Children are also given the opportunity to join the school choir and perform regularly at local events.
Through the musical program Charanga, teachers are able to produce inclusive lessons for all children and promote a love of learning and Music. Teachers deliver music following the programme, designed specifically for the teaching of music in primary schools. The lessons are planned in sequences to provide children with the opportunities to review, remember, deepen and apply their understanding. Each year, children’s knowledge is revisited and new skills are developed creating fluid progression.
Years 1 - 6 also study one composer each academic year whose work in linked to a topic they are studying. EYFS explore a variety of music genres, instruments, singing and much more as part of the imaginative and expressive strand of the expressive arts.
