The Richmond School
Year 5

Welcome to Year 5!

Welcome back! We hope you had a great summer break and are ready for the autumn term. Year 5 have made a really positive start to the year and we are really looking forward to the year ahead.
This term our main theme will be Romans in Britain! Naturally, the main focus will be History and we will consider the impact the Roman invasion on transport, language, religion and the people who already lived in Britannia.
In English this year the children will be learning about a wide range of genres. They will be learning to identify and use different features and write in different styles. Spelling rules and grammar will also be taught during the English lessons. Pupils will read during Guided Reading sessions where the focus will be on answering questions about different texts.
In Maths, pupils will be concentrating on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division this term. We will consider both effective mental and written methods. They will continue to focus on a range of topics including: place value, percentages, fractions, data handling, money and time. Pupils will be given opportunities to problem solve and apply skills to real life situations.
Science this term will have us thinking about what forces do. Children will be asking questions about why things happen as they do and what forces we experience around us. They will also design tests and experiments in order to see forces at work and how pulleys, levers and gears can allow small forces to have greater effects on an object.
Whilst two classes will be swimming this term on Thursday mornings, please ensure that P.E. kits are in school for our additional session on a Monday afternoon. We cannot overemphasise the importance of name labelling all of your child’s PE kit and school uniform. We often struggle to reunite unnamed, lost items with their owners and at year end we end up discarding many unclaimed items.
